The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Jun 2, 2022 | Bedfordshire Open Door

Bedfordshire Open Door has just been awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Bedfordshire Open Door is one of 244 charities from across the UK to receive the prestigious award this year. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways in which fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Recipients are announced each year on 2nd June, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation.

We are so delighted! There will be a formal awards ceremony in July where representatives of Bedfordshire Open Door will receive the award crystal and certificate from Helen Nellis, Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire. In addition, two volunteers from Bedfordshire Open Door will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023 (depending on restrictions at the time), along with other recipients of this year’s Award. The whole team will also celebrate with a special garden party at our centre for counselling in Tavistock Street, in June.

Michele Flynn, Operations Manager says: “We are thrilled to have received this honour from her majesty the Queen, especially in the Platinum Jubilee year. Our charity was one of four who received the award in Bedfordshire this year. Our volunteers are totally dedicated to the work of Bedfordshire Open Door, I highly commend their skills, experience and commitment to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of local young people. Our volunteers and staff continued to deliver the service throughout lockdown and now, as the need for mental health support is at an all-time high, we are so grateful for the time and expertise they give. Thank you one and all !”

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen Nellis said “We are exceptionally fortunate in Bedfordshire to have so many wonderful people giving their time freely and generously for the benefit of others. It is a great joy that these voluntary groups have been awarded such a prestigious honour during this very special Platinum Jubilee year. I am very much looking forward to visiting the groups later this year to present them with their awards and meeting all the wonderful volunteers. I offer them all my sincere congratulations, thanks and best wishes to all the successful groups”.
