The media has recently documented an increase in anxiety and depression in young people by up to 48% (ITV, 2019), and encourage viewers to ‘talk’ to alleviate anxiety and to mitigate the risk of depression. Research has shown that talking therapies are hugely effective, both in the short and long term.

Mental health issues affect the life chances of individuals in many ways, including their physical health, education and work prospects.

In 2017–18 only three in ten children and young people with a mental health condition received NHS-funded treatment, and many more faced unacceptably long waits for treatment.
