The counselling at Bedford Open Door is offered by a team of qualified and experienced volunteer counsellors.

The Commitment

A volunteer counsellor would commit to :

  • See 2 clients face to face each week

  • Attend regular supervision sessions fortnightly

  • Attend team meetings and 2 trainings per year

  • Meet with the Counselling Manager as required

Who would I work with?

You would work with young people in the age range 13-25. Our clients come from diverse cultural backgrounds. More young women than men use the service. The issues that clients bring are many and varied and may include relationship difficulties, loneliness, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sexual abuse or attack, confusion over sexual orientation, bereavement, bullying and suicidal feelings.

We work with clients on a 12 session model.

How much time would I need to offer?

We would require you to see 2 clients each week, plus time before and after to deal with paperwork (about 2.5 hours).

In addition you will need to allocate time for writing case notes and attending supervision. Supervision is every two weeks for a minimum of 1.5 hours.

Following a probationary period, we also ask for counsellors to cover a Saturday drop in session every 8-10 weeks.

There are several training opportunities offered for CPD during the year and we would expect attendance to at least 2 per year.

Occasional meetings with the Clinical Manager, as required

What qualifications do I need?

We welcome applications from people who are experienced counsellors qualified to at least Diploma level 4/5 and who have at least 100 face to face hours of counselling experience. All counsellors will need to have an enhanced DBS check.

Am I too old or too young?

There is no upper age limit, but due to the qualifications required, there is a lower age limit of 28 years.

What time do I need to commit?

We ask all volunteers for a minimum commitment to Bedford Open Door of two years.

Trustee Opportunity

We have a committed and active team of volunteer Trustees who work closely with the management team and the counsellors.

We would like to add some skills to those already around the table, particularly legal knowledge, HR and community networking.

We meet roughly once every two months with interim decisions made by email.

If you share our concern for the young people of Bedford and have some time to give, then please contact:-
