Big Lottery Grant Success !!!
All the hard work of the team has paid off and the Big Lottery, Reaching Communities fund, has awarded us a grant for three years.
The money is for expansion of the service, reaching more young people, especially those who don’t normally seek us out. It will enable us to extend our opening hours and place counsellors in outposts.
This extension of service will begin in September.
We owe a big thank you to the determination of our Fund Raiser Karen and to Gerry for taking the lead in this.
Our present work continues as before and continues to rely on the usual sources of funding. This includes your invaluable donations funding counselling for young people suffering emotional distress.
The next item will make it clear yet again how vital our service is to the young people of Bedfordshire and how important the plan to extend the work.
High Demand for Counselling
Last year we reported an increase in requests for counselling around January. We were waiting for the same this year and it didn’t come. It has hit now, and the waiting list has shot up. There are many factors contributing to the increase. The service is respected by GPs and other professionals and referrals are coming in from all over Bedfordshire. There are sadly too few counselling services for young people across the area.
The press continues to highlight the growing need for support for young people. Almost weekly there is an article presenting the worrying facts regarding the increased levels of low mood amongst young people across the country. A World Health Organisation report showed 15 year olds in England, Scotland and Wales are amongst the most stressed compared with other countries. Researches have been struck by the decline in life satisfaction among young people of 11-15 years.
‘Health behaviours and social habits and attitudes acquired in the critical second decade of a young person’s life can carry on into adulthood and affect the entire life course.’
Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO European regional director March 2016
