Bedford Open Door is a BACP Accredited Service www.bacp.co.uk
Bedford Open Door was the brainchild of Winnie Manning, a Youth Worker with the (then) Beds County Council). She realised, through her work with young people, that they needed a place where they could go and talk about sensitive issues in their lives.
Winnie met Liz Mines (one of the founder counsellors) at a counselling course and they were both involved with the early plans for a free counselling service for young people, in conjunction with the County Council.
And so in September 1995 Bedford Open Door was formally launched.
Since that time the service has been housed in many locations, but in April 2009 a permanent base for it was found in Tavistock Street.
The service was founded on a ‘volunteer’ basis with counsellors offering 2 hours per week. There has always been a willing band of volunteers.
Bedford Open Door is a charity and has been guided by a changing board of Trustees over the years, who have steered the service forward. The present board of Trustees had the vision to seek a permanent base and has overseen the purchase and refurbishment of the new building.
